Biographical Information

Warden's patchChick Howe was trained as an aircraft mechanic after he served on an aircraft carrier in W.W.II. He taught at East Coast Aero Tech in Bedford, Massachusetts for a short period of time. In 1957, Chick joined the Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Department as a district warden. His assignment was the Greenville area. Chick retired from the warden force in 1977 and joined Anne to run their sporting camps at Spencer Pond.

Anne Howe has always been interested in writing. Before Chick became a warden, she worked as a stringer for the Portland Press Herald newspaper and the Associated Press. After their moved to Greenville, the newspaper asked Anne to write a column about the "adventures of a game warden's wife." It was called "Yours truly, Anne Howe." She also became very active in several organizations including Greenville's Chamber of Commerce.

Main Lodge at Spencer Pond CampsIn 1959, Anne had the opportunity to purchase Spencer Pond Camps, north of Greenville and off Spencer Bay of Moosehead Lake. Realizing times were changing and the desires of the traveling public were different, Anne had eight years before Chick's retirement to change the tempo of the sporting camps. She designed a program to interest the modern visitor. During these years many graduate students from the University of Maine's wildlife program came to the camps from research. This also help change the camps.

Bully, my third childThe book, "Don't Get Your Feet Wet, Dear", written by Anne is the hilarious account of those first eight years of running Spencer Pond Camps.

In 1983, a Fish and Game biologist located in Greenville asked Anne to raise an orphaned moose calf. "Bully, My Third Child" tells the tender and often poignant adventure of raising Bully, the moose. Much was learned about moose from this unusual event.

Sunrise over Spencer PondAfter 25 years of operating the camps, it was evident a change of pace was needed for their aging bodies. New owners with similar ideals were found. Anne and Chick felt they could leave their guests with peace to their minds. Retirement was looked forward to and sounded interesting to them, but it turned out to be quickly boring.

Soon Chick became active restoring an old farm house they had bought in Thorndike, Maine. His vegetable Thorndike farmgarden produced enough for the neighborhood. Puttering on an old boat has filled a lot of hours for him, but he still dreams of building and flying an ultra-light airplane.

Anne has volunteered some of her time to the Town Office in Thorndike as a Deputy Town Clerk When she obtained her Notary Public Commission, Anne was appointed to serve on the board of the Informed Notaries of Maine. She has performed many marriages, and enjoys doing so. Anne's third book, "Help, I Need a Notary!" was written for the Informed Notaries and is a handbook for the public on what to expect from a Notary Public.

Maine Guide's patchAnne has recently retired from an assignment with the Fish and Wildlife Department's Advisory Board for Maine Guides. She represented the civilian on the Advisory Board made up of seven people. Other members of the board include game wardens and professional Maine guides.  This gave her an opportunity to work closely with Maine Guides, a function she enjoyed very much.

Anne's three published books are all non-fiction, but she dreams of publishing a popular science-fiction novel. She was written several in hopes of reaching this goal.

Both Chick and Anne have completely retired from their active life, but this new found retirement still keeps them busy and occupied with a variety of activities around their homestead in Thorndike. Life is far from boring for them.
